WilliamsMarston acquires Charted's NetSuite services practice

Charted keeps its AP automation software and exits consulting; the move sharpens both firms' focus at once.

WilliamsMarston, a Boston-based accounting, tax, technology, transaction, and valuation advisory firm, has acquired the NetSuite services practice from Charted, an ERP-native accounts payable automation software provider, CPA Practice Advisor reports. Financial terms were not disclosed. The acquired team specializes in implementation, configuration, customization, managed services, and training for growing and middle-market companies on NetSuite.

The deal is a clean separation of two different business models that had been living under one roof. CPA Practice Advisor notes that Charted will continue to operate independently as an AP automation software company, with the two firms forming a strategic referral partnership for shared clients. For Charted, shedding the services arm lets it concentrate entirely on product. For WilliamsMarston - which serves pre-IPO, public, and private equity-backed companies - the acquisition adds ERP implementation depth to its existing office-of-the-CFO and controller capabilities. The announcement says the deal also gives WilliamsMarston a foundation to expand AI-enabled ERP capabilities, including through its Finance as a Service practice, which provides outsourced operational and strategic finance support to early-stage companies.

The pattern here is familiar: advisory firms are buying implementation practices to close the gap between strategy and execution, and software vendors are shedding services arms to stay focused on product margin. For practitioners at mid-market firms, it is worth noting where your own firm sits on that divide. If your NetSuite clients are asking for ongoing managed services and your team is primarily transactional, the market is telling you something. The referral structure Charted and WilliamsMarston have put in place - where the software vendor routes consulting work to the acquirer - is also a model worth watching as more ERP-native automation vendors face the same build-or-sell decision on their services businesses.
