Where client data goes when an AI assistant answers your question
Two things sat on the desk this week: a new AICPA practice aid on AI for financial statement auditors, and our own explainer on what actually happens to client data when you paste it into an AI assistant. They belong together. The AICPA guidance tells auditors to think carefully about AI use; the explainer tells you what to check before you start. Elsewhere, Intuit is sunsetting QuickBooks Online Accountant in December 2026 and migrating US firms off it, which is the kind of deadline that tends to sneak up. PE deal flow in accounting is also easing - 37 deals in Q3 versus 58 in Q1 - which may matter more to firm owners than any product release this week.
THE LEAD
Where client data goes when an AI assistant answers your question

Before pasting a client file into an AI assistant, there are three things worth checking: the vendor's data processing agreement, the subprocessor list, and whether zero-retention terms apply to your account tier. The explainer maps exactly where data travels and what contractual language actually controls it - details that vary significantly by product and plan. Given how quickly AI assistants are being embedded into core accounting tools, knowing the data path is no longer optional due diligence.
STACK WATCH

Xero's JAX agent flags unreconciled items and anomalies inside the ledger
xero.com
JAX (Just Ask Xero) is an AI agent embedded directly in the Xero ledger that surfaces unreconciled items, duplicates, missing documents, and anomalies - and helps users resolve them in real time. Xero says the features sit within its 'Accountable Intelligence' framework and draw on 20 years of data from 5 million customers. Whether that data depth produces meaningfully better suggestions than a general model is the practical question accountants will answer once they get hands-on time.
QuickBooks Summer 2026 release adds AI narrative commentary and Expert Books Upkeep
quickbooks.intuit.com
The Summer 2026 QuickBooks release includes Enhanced Finance AI, which drafts narrative commentary around financial numbers, and Expert Books Upkeep, which pairs AI transaction matching with human expert validation and quarterly check-ins. Bill Pay Elite comes included in Advanced, and industry-specific solutions for construction and professional services are built into Advanced. The narrative commentary feature is worth watching - auto-drafted management commentary has been a long-standing ask from firms doing monthly reporting packages.

Intuit Intelligence enters Australian beta as QuickBooks Online Accountant sunset nears
Oct 14, 2026 · itwire.com
Intuit announced the international rollout of Intuit Intelligence, with new AI features entering beta for QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Online Advanced customers in Australia. The platform unifies AI capabilities across QuickBooks for business owners and the Intuit Accountant Suite, working from shared live data. The more pressing item for US firms: QuickBooks Online Accountant sunsets in December 2026, and migrations are underway - that is a real deadline on a short timeline.
INTELLIGENCE
Intelligence: consolidation continues, but the pace is shifting
PE deal flow in accounting drops to 37 in Q3, down from 58 in Q1 2026
Oct 9, 2026 · cpatrendlines.com
CPA Trendlines' October 2026 PE Deal Tracker puts Q3 at 37 U.S. and Canadian acquisitions, down from 42 a year earlier and well below Q1 2026's 58. The tracker's read is that platform firms are digesting a two-year acquisition spree while the earliest PE investors - those who came in three to five years ago - begin to look for exits. For firm owners, that exit pressure from early-vintage investors is worth watching: it tends to produce secondary transactions and reshuffled management rather than a quiet steady state.

What an AI audit trail should contain
A usable AI audit trail has five elements: the prompt, the inputs, the model version, the output, and a named reviewer - all captured at the time of use.
