Why AI invents numbers - and the prompt fix that stops it
The hallucination problem is not abstract for accounting work - it shows up in a drafted memo with a made-up depreciation figure, or a client email citing a tax rate that does not exist. This week's explainer goes straight at why LLMs do this and what a cite-or-say-nothing prompt actually looks like in practice. Elsewhere, the AICPA stood up a formal AI-in-tax council with Danny Werfel at the front, Pilot made a bold claim about autonomous bookkeeping, and the IPA's latest data put some numbers behind what advisory-heavy firms are actually earning per hour. There is also a read on AI-driven burnout that is worth five minutes if you manage a team.
THE LEAD
Why an AI model invents numbers - and how to stop it
modernaccounting.ai
LLMs are text-completion engines, not fact databases - they generate plausible sequences, and a plausible-sounding dollar figure is just as easy to produce as a correct one. The explainer on hallucination in accounting work explains the mechanic clearly and lands on a practical output: prompts that instruct the model to cite a source or say nothing, which is a different instruction than most people are giving today. If you are using any AI tool to draft figures, summaries or client-facing content, the framing here is worth adopting.
AICPA taps former IRS commissioner Danny Werfel to lead AI-in-tax council
Sep 23, 2026 · journalofaccountancy.com
The AICPA has stood up the Council on AI Risk in Tax, with former IRS commissioner Danny Werfel leading it. Per the Journal of Accountancy, participants span all areas of the tax world, with a stated focus on responsible use of AI in tax administration and practice. A cross-sector council with a former IRS head in the chair is a signal that governance conversations around AI in tax are moving from informal to institutional.

Pilot claims the first fully autonomous AI accountant for SMBs - zero humans in the loop
Aug 10, 2026 · aimultiple.com
Two distinct moves worth separating here: Intuit announced a multi-year partnership with Anthropic to deepen AI capabilities across its platform, and Pilot announced what it calls the world's first fully autonomous AI accountant for SMBs, covering onboarding through monthly close with no human intervention. The Intuit-Anthropic partnership is a platform bet; Pilot's claim is a product category bet - and 'zero human intervention' is exactly the phrase that should trigger a close read of what happens when something goes wrong at close.

IPA data: advisory concentration correlates with stronger revenue-per-hour economics
Sep 18, 2026 · insidepublicaccounting.com
Inside Public Accounting's latest data on the IPA 100 finds that 41.4% of revenue now comes from non-compliance services - client accounting, consulting and tax specialty work. Firms with the heaviest concentration of those services appear to be generating stronger revenue-per-hour numbers, though IPA stops short of claiming causation. For firms still deciding how aggressively to shift capacity toward advisory, this is the closest thing to a benchmarked economic case.
